Description

Common name: Misplaced Sea Gavial
Scientific name: Prodyrosaurus acer
Time: Maastrichtian (65 million years ago)
Size: 6 meters long, 1 ton
Diet: Fish
Distribution: Northern Africa
Despite its name a very common sight in the muddy rivers of Northern Africa, the Misplaced Sea Gavial is the nightmare of every fish. This Crocodylomorph belongs to a family known as Dyrosaurids – marine crocodiles with slender jaws full of numerous recurved teeth, ideal for catching fast-moving slippery fish. Dyrosaurids are also known as Sea Gavials, referring to their preferred habitat. They have smaller osteoderms than most other Crocodylomorphs to make their bodies more streamlined. In the future some Sea Gavials will give up their light armor entirely to become even more streamlined for their marine environment.
But Prodyrosaurus acer will pretty much stay the same for millions of years. For a Sea Gavial it does very well in the fish-infested freshwaters. Neither the Snapping Spinos nor the River Mosasaurs are exclusively piscivorous, but this Dyrosaurid is. Compared to the Crocodilian piscivores of our timeline, the gavials, its teeth are comparatively long and sharp. This is necessary because most fish in this rich environment are quite large, but the largest species are too much even for fully grown Dyrosaurids. The Misplaced Sea Gavial´s marine relationship can be spotted during mating time when they head to estuary mouths and also spend some time hunting fish in the shallows. They also build their nests downstream to avoid most of the egg-stealing Notosuchians which live more inland.
